WORK IN PROGRESS and ... FINISHED.

La bella immagine della partenza di Trittolemo raffigurata su un vaso conservato nel Museo Salinas di Palermo, mi ha molto affascinato.
La volevo. Perciò l'ho dipinta su un piatto di terracotta.
E' stato un lavoro impegnativo, soprattutto perché ho voluto utilizzare l'engobbio che richiede una  lunga ed accurata stesura del colore ( due o tre mani) e la cottura in forno a 980°C.
Mentre dipingi non puoi sapere quale sarà il risultato dopo la cottura. Non puoi fare altro che lavorare al meglio, sperando di ottenere alla fine l'effetto desiderato.
I was really fascinated by the beautiful image showing the departure of Triptolemus on a Greek vase preserved in Salinas Museum in Palermo.
I wanted it, so I painted it on a terracotta plate.
The job was hard, mainly because I wanted to use engobe that wants a long and careful application of color (two or three coats) and baking in the oven at 980°C (1796°F).
While painting, you can't know how it will be after baked. You only have to work the best you can, hoping to obtain the wanted result at least.

Ho disegnato la scena centrale in un cerchio ed ho riportato il disegno su un piatto di terracotta.
Poichè il piatto aveva un colore pallido che, con la cottura, sarebbe sbiadito ancora di più, l'ho immerso in acqua mescolata con engobbio rossiccio e poi l'ho spennellato con lo stesso engobbio molto diluito, poiché volevo ottenere una colorazione non pesante.
I drew the central scene in a circle and I reported the pattern on a terracotta plate.
As the plate had a pale color that, when cooked, will be even more pale, I plunged it in water mixed with reddish engobe  and then I brushed with the same engobe very diluted, because I wanted to get a not heavy staining.

Sul piatto umido, con un pennello lungo e sottile ho tracciato tutti i contorni con l'engobbio nero mescolato con un po' di cristallina e diluito in poca acqua.
On the moist dish, with a long thin brush, I drew all the outlines with black engobe mixed with a little crystalline and diluted in a little water.

Poi ho dipinto le campiture con pennelli tondi  più o meno piccoli, avendo cura che il piatto fosse sempre umido.

Ho lasciato asciugare e ho dato una seconda mano, in certe zone anche una terza mano con un pennello piatto.
Then I painted the background with round brushes more or less small, making sure that the plate was always moist.
I let it dry and I gave a second coat, in some areas even a third coat with a flat brush.

Poi l'ho fatto cuocere nel forno a 980°C.                    Then I baked in oven at 980°C (1796°F)
E questo è il risultato                                                              And this is the result.

Mi sembra soddisfacente. L'engobbio nero, grazie alla mescolanza con la cristallina, ha un effetto denso e profondo, l'engobbio rossiccio risulta leggero e sfumato, come desideravo.
A freddo, ho dato il tocco finale: la lingua rossa e biforcuta del drago conduttore del magico carro.
It seems satisfactory. The black engobe, thanks to the mixing with  crystalline, has a dense and deep effect, the reddish engobe  is light and nuanced, as I wished.
With fresh color, I put the final touche: the forked red tongue of the dragon conductor of the magic chariot.

Today I go on talking about the MOTHER GODDESS in the guise of DEMETER I spocke about in a previous post
Oggi continuo a discorrere della DEA MADRE in veste di DEMETRA di cui ho parlato in un precedente post

This beautiful image shows the departure of TRIPTOLEMOS on a winged chariot between DEMETER the mother goddess, and PERSEPHONE,the goddess girl (also called CORE).
Who is he? Where is he going?
It is a little long history begun when Persephone ( Demeter's daughter ) was abducted.
The desperate mother went all around the world for nine days and nine nights, looking for the beloved daughter, but it was impossible to find her because she had been abducted by Hades, god of the underworld.
Demeter, the goddess of life on Earth, forgot her duties and the Earth did not produce any fruit.

At last she reached an agreement with Hades: every year, Persephone would spend six months in the Underworld and six months on Earth.
For this reason, every year we have a period without fruits and harvest (winter time) and period full of fruit and harvest (spring-summer time).
Demeter makes fruitful the earth only when her daughter returns there.
Questa bella immagine mostra la partenza di Trittolemo su un carro alato tra Demetra, la dea Madre, e Persefone, la dea fanciulla (Core).
Chi è Trittolemo? Dove sta andando?
E' una storia un po' lunga, iniziata quando Persefone (figlia di Demetra) fu rapita.
La madre disperata andò in giro per il mondo per nove giorni e nove notti, a cercare l'amata figlia, ma era impossibile trovarla, perché era stata rapita da Ade, il dio degli Inferi.
Demetra, dea della vita sulla Terra, dimenticò i suoi compiti e la Terra non produceva più frutti.
Alla fine raggiunse un accordo con Ade: ogni anno, Persefone avrebbe trascorso sei mesi negli Inferi e sei mesi sulla Terra.
Per questo motivo, noi abbiamo ogni anno un periodo senza frutti e raccolti ( tempo invernale ) e un periodo fecondo di frutti e di messi ( tempo della primavera e dell'estate).
Demetra rende feconda la Terra solo quando la figlia vi ritorna.

And TRIPTOLEMOS? 
what  has he to do with all this?
Well, while going here and there looking for her daughter, Demeter, in guise of an old woman, arrived at Eleusi, where she was well accepted by the king and his wife. 
When all was finished and there was the agreement with Hades, Demeter decided to thank the Eleusi's king, teaching his son Triptolemos how to till the soil. 
And, finally, she send him around the world teaching men what he had learned.
E TRITTOLEMO?
cosa ha a che fare in tutto questo?
Bene, durante l'affannosa ricerca della figlia, Demetra arrivò ad Eleusi dove, sotto le spoglie di una vecchia si presentò per avere ospitalità al re che, insieme alla moglie, la accolse con favore.
Quando tutto finì con l'accordo raggiunto con Ade, Demetra decise di ringraziare il re di Eleusi, insegnando l'agricoltura a suo figlio Trittolemo.
Dopo di che lo mandò per il mondo ad insegnare agli uomini ciò che aveva imparato.

Ovviamente, Trittolemo andò anche in Egitto
Of course, Triptolemus went in Egypt too

Torniamo quindi a guardare l'immagine iniziale: Trittolemo è in partenza per andare a diffondere nel mondo la coltivazione della terra, Demetra lo saluta versandogli una bevanda sacra e porgendogli le spighe di grano, dai cui chicchi nasceranno  nuove messi.
Let us return now to look at the initial image: Triptolemus is leaving to go to promote agriculture worldwide, Demeter greets him by pouring a sacred drink and handing him the ears of corn, beans from which new crops will be born.
