WORK IN PROGRESS and ... FINISHED.

I was really fascinated by the beautiful image showing the departure of Triptolemus on a Greek vase preserved in Salinas Museum in Palermo.
I wanted it, so I painted it on a terracotta plate.
The job was hard, mainly because I wanted to use engobe that wants a long and careful application of color (two or three coats) and baking in the oven at 980°C (1796°F).
While painting, you can't know how it will be after baked. You only have to work the best you can, hoping to obtain the wanted result at least.
ecco l'immagine ispiratrice: MERAVIGLIOSA!
here the inspiring image: WOUNDERFUL!

I drew the central scene in a circle and I reported the pattern on a terracotta plate.
As the plate had a pale color that, when cooked, will be even more pale, I plunged it in water mixed with reddish engobe  and then I brushed with the same engobe very diluted, because I wanted to get a not heavy staining.

On the moist dish, with a long thin brush, I drew all the outlines with black engobe mixed with a little crystalline and diluted in a little water.

Then I painted the background with round brushes more or less small, making sure that the plate was always moist.
I let it dry and I gave a second coat, in some areas even a third coat with a flat brush.

And so on, until covering all around the figures

Poi l'ho fatto cuocere nel forno a 980°C.                    Then I baked in oven at 980°C (1796°F)
E questo è il risultato                                                              And this is the result.
It seems satisfactory. The black engobe, thanks to the mixing with  crystalline, has a dense and deep effect, the reddish engobe  is light and nuanced, as I wished.
With fresh color, I put the final touche: the forked red tongue of the dragon conductor of the magic chariot.

DEMETRA e TRITTOLEMO

DEMETER e TRITTOLEMO
DEMETER and TRIPTOLEMOS

Today I go on talking about the MOTHER GODDESS in the guise of DEMETER I spocke about in a previous post

This beautiful image shows the departure of TRIPTOLEMOS on a winged chariot between DEMETER the mother goddess, and PERSEPHONE,the goddess girl (also called CORE).
Who is he? Where is he going?
It is a little long history begun when Persephone ( Demeter's daughter ) was abducted.
The desperate mother went all around the world for nine days and nine nights, looking for the beloved daughter, but it was impossible to find her because she had been abducted by Hades, god of the underworld.
Demeter, the goddess of life on Earth, forgot her duties and the Earth did not produce any fruit.

At last she reached an agreement with Hades: every year, Persephone would spend six months in the Underworld and six months on Earth.
For this reason, every year we have a period without fruits and harvest (winter time) and period full of fruit and harvest (spring-summer time).
Demeter makes fruitful the earth only when her daughter returns there.

And TRIPTOLEMOS?
what  has he to do with all this?
Well, while going here and there looking for her daughter, Demeter, in guise of an old woman, arrived at Eleusi, where she was well accepted by the king and his wife.
When all was finished and there was the agreement with Hades, Demeter decided to thank the Eleusi's king, teaching his son Triptolemos how to till the soil.
And, finally, she send him around the world teaching men what he had learned.
E TRITTOLEMO?

Of course, Triptolemus went in Egypt too

Let us return now to look at the initial image: Triptolemus is leaving to go to promote agriculture worldwide, Demeter greets him by pouring a sacred drink and handing him the ears of corn, beans from which new crops will be born.

THE SIGN OF VIRGO, THE GREAT MOTHER

SOTTO  IL SEGNO DELLA VERGINE
UNDER THE SIGN OF VIRGO

According to the astronomical calendar, in his apparent yearly path, the Sun enters the sign of Virgo on September 16th and stays there until October 30th.

In my opinion, the most interesting stars in this constellation are these two ones: SPICA (Alpha Virginis) and VINDEMIATRIX (Epsilon Virginis).
SPICA is the brightest one and, actually, it is an "eclipsing binary star," that is a pair of stars that orbit each around the other and eclipse each other, so that Spica appears variable in its brightness.
VINDEMIATRIX  is the third-placed for brightness in the constellation and is a "giant yellow star"

Who is the VIRGO who is shining in the sky?
Do not think it is a contradiction, but she is the MOTHER GODDESS, the oldest of all the gods, the one who, during the primordial times of matriarchy, embodied the cyclical changes of Nature, within which the mystery of Life was hidden, such as  the sequence of the seasons on  Earth or the phases of Moon

Like NATURE, also the MOTHER GODDESS is cyclically changing.
Before, She is a flourishing girl (virgin) like the Earth blooming in spring or like the Crescent Moon. Then, She is full woman (nymph) like the Full Moon, She is fecund like the fruiting Earth in summer and early autumn. Finally, She is declining (old woman) but destined to regenerate, like the Waning Moon that, after darkened, grows again or like the wintry Earth that, barren on the surface, keeps life in the  seeds germinating under the ground, to bloom in spring.

In historical times, when the myths were written, the triple manifestation (virgin, nymph, old woman) of the one Mother Goddess, led to her division in the different Olympic goddesses such as Artemis, Core-Persephone (virgin goddess), Aphrodite, Hera  (nymph goddess), infernal Hecate (old woman goddess).
Among these goddesses only one expresses the oldest and most beautiful meaning  of the Mother Goddess. She is DEMETER, the MOTHER EARTH, one of the oldest Olympian gods, the goddess of the harvest and agriculture, to whom the Myth attributes the cyclical changing of the seasons.

So Demeter is the one who shines in the  Virgo constellation, where the star Spica is the ear of wheat that, like the virgin goddess, is born and grows in spring and becomes fully mature in summer, when DEMETER, the MOTHER EARTH, gives the crops of wheat, followed by many other fruits, such as grapes.
So, in the constellation, there is Vindemiatrix, the star of the harvest, which begins in late August, just as the Sun enters the sign of the Virgo according to the astrological calendar that, when it was established about 2000 years ago, gave the exact dates of the  zodiac constellations.
