When I read " GREEK MYTHS" by Robert Graves I was impressed by the argument that the Greek myths are rooted in ancient times of matriarchy.
Created in the patriarchal society to celebrate the Olympic religion with Zeus father and master of the gods, they transfigure the events of transition from one society to the other, from one to the other religion, but also conceal the ancient rites of the time of the Mother Goddess .
The mother of Dionysus, Semele, downgraded to mortal princess in the myth, was an ancient manifestation of the Mother Goddess.
Her incineration by the thunderbolt of Zeus shows the overcoming of the new patriarchal religion that eliminates the ancient goddess but appropriates her cult and suits to new needs.
Thus Dionysus is snatched from the burned body of his mother to be born from the thigh of the patriarchal god.

As noted in a previous post, the life force of Nature moved from the goddess to Dionysus who, although having feminine features in his face, is however a male god.
He is the deification of the sacred king, the "paredro" who, in the matriarchal society, flanked the queen and, annually, in the thirteenth month, was sacrificed by the priestesses who spread his limbs and his blood on the earth to make it fruitful (sparagmos).

The Maenads of Dionysus, being furious, repeat this ritual, sacrificing and dismembering animals representing the god himself killed and dismembered by the Titans and then risen, as well as  the sacred king "rose" again in the person of a new king, who, in turn, would be sacrificed to spray with his blood the ground and allow it to flourish. So it was repeated, in a bloody way, the cycle of the Sun, who, from solstice to solstice, gives energy to the Earth where the Mother Goddess cyclically kept life and made it manifest.

Also the killing with dismembering of other mythological characters, like Orpheus or Penteus, they too killed by the Bacchae (another name of the Maenads), are referred to the sacrifice of the sacred king.

With patriarchy, the sacred king never dies again but reigns instead of the queen who no longer has power. Also the Great Goddess is ousted by multiple male and female deities among which  perhaps Dionysus personifies  the deepest  and obscure aspects of the past religion.
He, last received  among the twelve Olympian gods, brings the majority in favor of the male gods, because he takes the place of Hestia, goddess of the hearth, who goes down to live among human people.
At the same time, he  rehabilitates, even if marginally, the ancient Goddess.
In fact, he leads from the Underworld to Olympus his mother Semele, to whom Zeus reserves a secondary role under the new name of Tione.

DIONISO

DIONISO  DIONYSUS

Dionysus personifies the life force of Nature that explodes in the spring blooms, expresses all its fruits in summer and early autumn and then goes out in the winter months, to restart the cycle of life on earth in the following spring.

Dionysus, as telling the myths about his childhood, was born prematurely when his mother Semele died victim of lightning of Zeus, was reborn from the thigh of his father Zeus, within which he had completed his development, arose to a new life after being killed and torn to pieces by the Titans incited against him by Hera.
So Dionysus personifies an unstoppable life force, just the power of Nature is.

If Demeter embodies the cyclical nature of life on Earth, Dionysus personifies the strength that sets it in motion. As Demetra corresponds to the oldest Mother Goddess, Dionysus corresponds to the ancient male god accompanying her to give Nature the necessary energy.

It should be added that in his procession, besides the Satyrs, there are the Maenads, women quite similar to the priestesses who, at the time of matriarchy, held the sacred rituals of the Mother goddess with the queen who was her representative .

The myth says that, with this procession, the young Dionysus, made a fool by Hera, wandered along the shores of the Mediterranean sea and through Asia to India spreading everywhere the cultivation of grapes and the use of wine, the drink that inebriates, melts constraints and then approaches the primitive natural state of mankind, free from any social convention.

So, vine and wine are sacred to Dionysus who often holds vine leaves, a kantharos or a drinking horn in his hands.
Ivy is also sacred to him and usually crowns his head. In fact, ivy symbolizes the immortal life spirit of Nature, since, even in winter, when all the fruits, including grapes, have disappeared, the lush ivy continues to snake through the Earth.

The god holds the thyrsus, stick topped with a pine cone. Even the pine cone is the fruit of evergreen plants.

I close with these two plates. They are made of  terracotta and are hand-painted copies of the original pottery painting I proposed at the beginning.
In the first one, I completely respected the original features. In the second I wanted to introduce some color notes.
Both were appreciated and bought.
But, if you are interested, contact me and I'll be pleased.
