TAURUS: il SOLE,la LUNA

TAURUS: the SUN, the MOON

This thing that Europe and the Bull-Zeus are really the Moon and the Sun caught me and I wanted to get into it with paints and brushes.
So I looked for an image that was suggestive and I painted on a terracotta dish.
Here it is: the old ceramic is in a museum in Vienna, but my plate is located at the MITOliberty shop, where you can find more pictures, more information and even the price.

But back to the old tales!
The Mediterranean peoples worshiped the Moon Goddess, a manifestation of the Mother Goddess, but the Babylonians worshiped the Moon God, a male god named Sin who, as the Mediterranean goddess, ruled the cyclical flow of life on Earth.
Sin was represented with bovine horns on his head and was symbolized by the bull.

In the fourth millennium BC, Babylonian astronomers identified the zodiacal constellation of the spring equinox with Taurus (Bull), that is, with the Moon God Sin,  because it was Sin to govern the life  on Earth  flourishing on spring equinox, when the Sun leaves the southern hemisphere of the zodiac (the Underworld) and starts to climb the northern hemisphere, bringing light and warmth.

Mediterranean people also identified the constellation of the spring equinox with the bull that, however,  symbolized the Sun whose disk, in fact, they placed between the horns of the bull representing the Sun.
For Mediterranean peoples the Bull-Sun was well suited to the constellation of the spring equinox, because it indicated the ascent of the sun.

As we know, because of the precession, the Bull is no longer the constellation  of equinox spring, but it will be again after a 25,920 year cycle.

Beef horns, probably because of their shape, were also emblematic of the Mediterranean Moon Goddesses such as Phoenician Astarte, the Egyptian Isis, the pre-Hellenic Selene, or the olimpic Artemis-Diana, which were manifestations of the Mother Goddess.

The Great Mother Moon, as the Babylonian Sin, ruled life on Earth that, with the spring equinox, is gradually strengthened by the growing power of the Sun, that, at the Mediterranean peoples, was represented by the Bull.
About Europe (the Moon "with the large eyes") riding the solar Bull, yes it represented the Sun-Moon conjunction, but it also meant that the cyclical nature of life on Earth depended on the force of the Sun ruled by the Moon, that is the same belief of the ancient Babylonian astronomers.

... Tutto scorre, Panta rei! ...
But the myth, created in later times, identified the Bull-Sun with Bull-Zeus of the new patriarchal religion. He kidnaps and subdues the Goddess of the ancient religion, downgraded to mortal princess.
... Everything flows, Panta rei! ...

To get in tune with the Sun and the Moon, I wanted to create a pair of earrings, one with the head of the Bull, the other with the head of Europe.
Here they are!

I was wearing and immediately a lady asked me to do buy....

DIONISO

DIONISO  DIONYSUS
Dionysus dancing with thyrsus and drinkimg horn.Kylix (about 489 BC) found in Cerveteri and preserved in the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome

Dionysus personifies the life force of Nature that explodes in the spring blooms, expresses all its fruits in summer and early autumn and then goes out in the winter months, to restart the cycle of life on earth in the following spring.

Dionysus, as telling the myths about his childhood, was born prematurely when his mother Semele died victim of lightning of Zeus, was reborn from the thigh of his father Zeus, within which he had completed his development, arose to a new life after being killed and torn to pieces by the Titans incited against him by Hera.
So Dionysus personifies an unstoppable life force, just the power of Nature is.

If Demeter embodies the cyclical nature of life on Earth, Dionysus personifies the strength that sets it in motion. As Demetra corresponds to the oldest Mother Goddess, Dionysus corresponds to the ancient male god accompanying her to give Nature the necessary energy.

It should be added that in his procession, besides the Satyrs, there are the Maenads, women quite similar to the priestesses who, at the time of matriarchy, held the sacred rituals of the Mother goddess with the queen who was her representative .

The myth says that, with this procession, the young Dionysus, made a fool by Hera, wandered along the shores of the Mediterranean sea and through Asia to India spreading everywhere the cultivation of grapes and the use of wine, the drink that inebriates, melts constraints and then approaches the primitive natural state of mankind, free from any social convention.

So, vine and wine are sacred to Dionysus who often holds vine leaves, a kantharos or a drinking horn in his hands.
Ivy is also sacred to him and usually crowns his head. In fact, ivy symbolizes the immortal life spirit of Nature, since, even in winter, when all the fruits, including grapes, have disappeared, the lush ivy continues to snake through the Earth.

The god holds the thyrsus, stick topped with a pine cone. Even the pine cone is the fruit of evergreen plants.

I close with these two plates. They are made of  terracotta and are hand-painted copies of the original pottery painting I proposed at the beginning.
In the first one, I completely respected the original features. In the second I wanted to introduce some color notes.
Both were appreciated and bought.
But, if you are interested, contact me and I'll be pleased.

CIPOLLE DORATE PER UN PETTO DI POLLO golden onions for a chicken breast

In itself, the chicken breast is a bit insipid food. But the golden onions can revive its taste.

LET'S SEE HOW!

VEDIAMO COME!

 VI OCCORRONO
YOU NEED

un petto di pollo di circa 0,5 kg
a chicken breast about 0.5 kg
6 cipolle dorate
6 golden onions
mezzo bicchiere di vino bianco secco
a half glass of dry white wine
2 foglie di alloro
2 laurel leaves
2 peperoncini
2 chilies
olio extravergine di oliva
extra virgin olive oil
sale
salt

PROCEDIAMO
LET'S GO ON
Preheat the oven at 180 °C (356°F).
Slice the onions and place in a pan with oil, salt, laurel leaves and chilies.
Fry them for 10 to 15 minutes.
Put the chicken breast among the onions, add salt on both sides and roll it in the oil.
Wash down with wine.
Cover the pan with aluminum foil with holes here and there and put in the oven.
Cook for about 30 minutes, then remove the aluminum cover, stir the onions, turn over the chicken breast.
Continue cooking in the oven at pan uncovered for another hour, turning every so both chicken and onions and adding wine if necessary.
ECCO IL RISULTATO.
HERE IS THE RESULT.

The chicken breast is soft.
Slice and put on the table in a dish together with the onions.
Eat it with polenta and red wine, for example Gutturnio Colli Piacentini.

And after the taste sense, we satisfy the view sense, looking at a chicken not finished in the pot but become rooster, the rooster that Zeus gave to the beautiful Ganymede to seduce him
