Athena the warrior masterchef goddess, Athena glaucopis, Athena whose eyes are cerulean or, better, are shining like as owl eyes shine in the dark.
Owl is bird sacred to the goddess, the bird identifing her, also shown armed as Athena herself.

The big eyes give a large and long view giving knoweldge and wisdom.
Not only Athena is war goddess, but also and mainly she is the wise goddess, inventor of music instruments such as the flute, inventor of arts and useful tecniques such as weaving and cultivation of olive tree, that I painted near the owl on the earring.
All features coming from the prehistoric Bird Goddess, that was the Great Goddess as She Who gives life and wellness.
As water was a source of life, She was mostly water birds, but, to indicate her wisdom, She was depicted with the owl, highlighting its big eyes.

If we look at Athena's clothing, we see the snakes edging her coat: this is also an attribute of the Great Prehistoric Goddess as a goddess of Nature regenerating in spring, like the snake awakening from the lethargy and coming out of its old skin.

This owl-shaped funerary urn with vulva and brests well expresses the various functions of the preistoric Goddess: death dispenser, but also  life giver and mother nursing the living, the one who wisely directs the balance of Nature.

..........................................

So, how do you not perceive in these earrings and pendant meanings that are lost in the night of the times?
a charm coming not only from bright Greek mythology but also from the mysterious prehistory.

The Sphinx, in Greek mythology, was the daughter of two monsters, Echidna and Typhon. She was a monster with a woman's head, winged lion body and snake tail. Her name means strangler.

The myth tells  that the Sphinx came to Thebes from Africa, sent by Hera, to punish the Tebanes because of a mistake made by their king.
There, the Sphinx offered to the passers-by an enigma and, if they did not solve it, she devoured them.
Oedipus  resolved, and the Sphinx killed herself by jumping from the reef  where she was crouching.

Over time, they were many the artistic rapresentations of Sfinx

This monster spoken of by the myth could actually be a mythologicail transformation of the ancient Goddess Lady of Life and Death and of Time, the prehistoric Regent of Nature, called the Great Goddess by archeologist Marija Gimbutas.

The lion and snake that make up her body can indicate the two seasons of an ancient calendar: the season of Nature that blooms with all its life force (the lion) and the season of Nature that declines and dies but is able to reborn (the serpent going to lethargy and awakening, renewing when it changes its skin).
The great wings indicated the power of the prehistoric Great Goddess who, as Lady of Death, was often identified with a vulture or other birds by the wide wingspan. But, at the same time, she was also Lady of Life, as Life is dependent on a natural equilibrium to which the Goddess provides, on the one hand, as a Source of Life and, on the other hand, as a Dispenser of Death.
The Theban Sphinx is called by Aeschylus "Ker who ravishes  the humans" and Ker is destiny, fate.
Keres are the Moire (the Roman Parcels) who weave wrap and cut the thread of Life

At the heart of the Cyclades archipelago, in the Aegean Sea, there is Delo, the bright island, because it shone with light when Apollo was born.

Indeed, Apollo, the god of the Sun and Light, was born in Delo, because his Mother Leto (or Latona), pregnant with Zeus, had taken refuge in order to escape the fury of Era.
Shortly before him, his sister Artemis was born, who helped her mother to bear him

While Apollo was the god of the Sun, Artemis (Diana for the Romans) was the goddess of the Moon, the heir of the preistoric Great  Goddess of Life, Death and Regeneration who, like the Moon, continually regenerated and, with her phases, controlled the birth, life and death of all living beings.
In fact, Artemis was born in Delo without any help and gave assistance to the birth of his brother, showing her generating force.
Generally depicted as a young and wild virgin, accompanied by wild animals, with a bow and arrows as a hunter, the Goddess personified the vigor of the lush nature in the spring months, the Moon in its growing phase.
The appearance of the waning moon and the sleeping nature of the winter months was inherited by Ecate, a very old goddess linked to the reign of the dead, also carrying many features of the preistoric Great Goddess.

There are many depictions of Apollo and Artemis  in Greek art.
I liked the inner circle of a kylix of 470 BC, the work of the Brygos painter, visible in the Louvre Museum

Il gioco del COTTABO = KOTTABOS game

Durante i simposi, i Greci giocavano al cottabo.
Il gioco si svolgeva con diverse varianti.
During symposiums, the Greeks used to play Kottabos.
The play had some variants.

They threw the wine remained on the bottom of their kylix to hit a metal disk hovering over a pole in the middle of the room. When hit, the disk fell down and hit a lower one.

Otherwise, wine had to hit some disks on the water in a large bowl in the middle of the room.

Or, more simply, wine had to hit the inside of a metal bowl .

Dai suoni prodotti, si traevano presagi d'amore.
From the given sounds, they drew omens of love.

To see the play, look at this video, where some students are playing, after doing historical research.

Now, you can look at this terracotta plate I handpainted as a copy of the top image, that was painted by Douris about in 450 B.C. in the round inside a kilyx found in Vulci and shown in Florence Archaeological Museum.

The day, since morning, occurred gray and rainy, very month of November.

I thought to warm the atmosphere cooking a typical dish of Brescia, my city: cabbage rolls, in the local dialect called "capù sensa ale", ie "without wings capons".
Why this name?
Here to you an explication: a peasant woman had decided to cook a capon and, therefore, she had prepared a good filling.
But when she went into the chicken coop to catch the unfortunate bird, she did not find it.
Escaped? Stolen? We do not know.

What to do with the ready filling? The peasant woman saw a beautiful cabbage in the vegetable garden and thought to fill its leaves instead of the capon.

ECCO LA MIA RICETTA
12 foglie di verza
burro, olio
uno spicchio di aglio
10 cucchiai di pane grattuggiato
10 cucchiai di formaggio grana grattuggiato
2 uova,
prezzemolo
spezie macinate (cannella, noce moscata ...)
latte
sale
mezzo dado

HERE MY RECIPE !

12 cabbage leaves
butter, oil
a clove of garlic
10 tablespoons of breadcrumbs
10 tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese
2 eggs,
parsley
ground spices (cinnamon, nutmeg ...)
milk
salt
half bouillon cube
1 tablespoon tomato paste

Wash the cabbage leaves and boil until they soften and become folding. Then drain.

I prefer to put them in the pressure cooker on the basket of steam cooking and, when the pan whistles, wait 2 minutes and turn off.

Fry the garlic in a little butter, then remove it, turn off the heat and, mixing thoroughly, add bread, parmesan cheese, eggs and  milk enough to make a soft dough. Add a little of parsley. a sprinkling of spices and a pinch of salt.

Take the leaves, remove the central coast, if it is too hard, wrap them around a spoonful of filling and close every roll with a toothpick (or string).

In a saucepan put 1 cup and a half of water with half bouillon cube and a tablespoon of tomato paste, let it boil until everything is nicely melted, forming a broth.

In a large saucepan, maybe earthenware, dissolve a bit of butter and oil, arrange the rolls. brown them a bit and then add the broth prepared in the pan.
Cook covered over low heat for at least three quarters of an hour.

Si può servire con purè di patate.
You can serve with mashed potatoes

TAURUS: il SOLE,la LUNA

TAURUS: the SUN, the MOON

This thing that Europe and the Bull-Zeus are really the Moon and the Sun caught me and I wanted to get into it with paints and brushes.
So I looked for an image that was suggestive and I painted on a terracotta dish.
Here it is: the old ceramic is in a museum in Vienna, but my plate is located at the MITOliberty shop, where you can find more pictures, more information and even the price.

But back to the old tales!
The Mediterranean peoples worshiped the Moon Goddess, a manifestation of the Mother Goddess, but the Babylonians worshiped the Moon God, a male god named Sin who, as the Mediterranean goddess, ruled the cyclical flow of life on Earth.
Sin was represented with bovine horns on his head and was symbolized by the bull.

In the fourth millennium BC, Babylonian astronomers identified the zodiacal constellation of the spring equinox with Taurus (Bull), that is, with the Moon God Sin,  because it was Sin to govern the life  on Earth  flourishing on spring equinox, when the Sun leaves the southern hemisphere of the zodiac (the Underworld) and starts to climb the northern hemisphere, bringing light and warmth.

Mediterranean people also identified the constellation of the spring equinox with the bull that, however,  symbolized the Sun whose disk, in fact, they placed between the horns of the bull representing the Sun.
For Mediterranean peoples the Bull-Sun was well suited to the constellation of the spring equinox, because it indicated the ascent of the sun.

As we know, because of the precession, the Bull is no longer the constellation  of equinox spring, but it will be again after a 25,920 year cycle.

Beef horns, probably because of their shape, were also emblematic of the Mediterranean Moon Goddesses such as Phoenician Astarte, the Egyptian Isis, the pre-Hellenic Selene, or the olimpic Artemis-Diana, which were manifestations of the Mother Goddess.

The Great Mother Moon, as the Babylonian Sin, ruled life on Earth that, with the spring equinox, is gradually strengthened by the growing power of the Sun, that, at the Mediterranean peoples, was represented by the Bull.
About Europe (the Moon "with the large eyes") riding the solar Bull, yes it represented the Sun-Moon conjunction, but it also meant that the cyclical nature of life on Earth depended on the force of the Sun ruled by the Moon, that is the same belief of the ancient Babylonian astronomers.

... Tutto scorre, Panta rei! ...
But the myth, created in later times, identified the Bull-Sun with Bull-Zeus of the new patriarchal religion. He kidnaps and subdues the Goddess of the ancient religion, downgraded to mortal princess.
... Everything flows, Panta rei! ...

To get in tune with the Sun and the Moon, I wanted to create a pair of earrings, one with the head of the Bull, the other with the head of Europe.
Here they are!

I was wearing and immediately a lady asked me to do buy....

TAURUS: il MITO, the MYTH

Last July 22nd I was at the seaside on the Adriatic sea and I awoke early.
I got up, I took the bike and went to the beach.

It was 5:50 a.m. and the sun had just risen above the horizon while the Moon, early in its waning phase and still high in the sky, was starting its descent towards the west.
I took some pictures and I realized the above composition.
If I were back in the following days on the beach to wonder at the rosy-fingered Aurora. I could see that, day after day, the waning moon would always be found closer to the rising sun and more and more thinned, until August 2nd, when the new moon, now invisible, would rise with the sun.
The new moon, in fact, is in conjunction with the sun.

metopa di un tempio di Selinunte
metope of a temple of Selinunte.
In pre-Hellenic world, especially Cretan, the sun-moon conjunction was represented with the Moon goddess riding the Bull personifying the Sun god.

As one of the names of the  Moon Goddess was Europe, which means "with large eyes", Greeks mythographers, inspired by this image, built the myth of Zeus  who, in love with the Phoenician princess Europe, took the form of a very nice white bull, sociable and meek, approached her while she was playing with her friends on the beach and persuaded her to climb astride.
The Bull-Zeus kidnapped Europe, entered the sea and swam up to to Crete, where their son Minos was to initiate the Minoan civilization, with which the bull was a very important animal present in rituals, public events and dangerous acrobatic games.

This myth was often represented from the ancient times to our times

The myth ends by saying that the bull that had lent his likeness to Zeus, was raised to the sky in the constellation that bears his name, the Taurus constellation.
