SFINGE 2

La SFINGE, per lo più conosciuta come il mostro sconfitto da Edipo, era precedentemente una  manifestazione della preistorica Grande Dea Madre Signora della Natura, della Vita e della Morte.

La grande forza della Natura e la sua capacità di rigenerarsi sono rappresentate dal corpo di Leone, animale grande e potente, e dalla coda di Serpente, animale che esce rinnovato dalla sua vecchia pelle.

Le grandi ali spiegate sono come quelle dell'avvoltoio che spesso raffigurava la Dea Signora della Morte.

Sotto le sue zampe, la Sfinge protegge un Pesce che, in quanto animale vivente nell'acqua fonte della vita, era simbolo di vita e di nascita, tanto da essere spesso   raffigurato nel grembo della Dea.

Tutto questo è quel "mostro di Sfinge".

The Sphinx, mostly known as the monster defeated by Oedipus, was formerly a manifestation of prehistoric Great Mother Goddess Lady of Nature, Life and Death.

The great force of nature and its ability to regenerate are represented by the body of lion, great and powerful animal, and the tail of snake, an animal that comes renewed by its old skin.

The large wings are like the wings of vultures that often portrayed the Goddess Death Lady.

Beneath her feet, the Sphinx protects a fish that, being an animal living in the water source of life, was symbol of life and birth. So that it was often portrayed in the womb of the Goddess.

All of this is that "the Sphinx monster."

DIONISO  DIONYSUS

Dioniso danzante con tirso e corno potorio.

Dioniso personifica la forza vitale della Natura che esplode nelle fioriture primaverili, esprime tutti i suoi frutti in estate e nel primo autunno e poi si spegne nei mesi invernali, per ricominciare il ciclo della vita sulla terra nella seguente primavera. 

Dionysus personifies the life force of Nature that explodes in the spring blooms, expresses all its fruits in summer and early autumn and then goes out in the winter months, to restart the cycle of life on earth in the following spring.

Dioniso, come raccontano i miti relativi alla sua infanzia, nacque prematuro dopo che sua madre Semele morì vittima della folgore di Zeus, rinacque dalla coscia del padre Zeus, all'interno della quale aveva completato il suo sviluppo, risorse a nuova vita dopo essere stato ucciso e fatto a brani dai Titani aizzati da Era contro di lui. 

Personifica quindi una forza vitale inarrestabile, proprio come quella della Natura.

Dionysus, as telling the myths about his childhood, was born prematurely when his mother Semele died victim of lightning of Zeus, was reborn from the thigh of his father Zeus, within which he had completed his development, arose to a new life after being killed and torn to pieces by the Titans incited against him by Hera.

So Dionysus personifies an unstoppable life force, just the power of Nature is.

Se Demetra personifica la ciclicità della vita sulla Terra, Dioniso personifica la forza che la mette in moto. Come Demetra corrisponde alla più antica Dea Madre, così Dioniso corrisponde all'antica divinità maschile che la accompagnava per dare alla Natura la necessaria energia.

If Demeter embodies the cyclical nature of life on Earth, Dionysus personifies the strength that sets it in motion. As Demetra corresponds to the oldest Mother Goddess, Dionysus corresponds to the ancient male god accompanying her to give Nature the necessary energy.

A ciò si aggiunga che nella sua processione, oltre ai Satiri, ci sono le Menadi,  donne del tutto somiglianti alle sacerdotesse che, ai tempi del matriarcato, svolgevano i sacri riti della dea Madre con la regina che la rappresentava.
It should be added that in his procession, besides the Satyrs, there are the Maenads, women quite similar to the priestesses who, at the time of matriarchy, held the sacred rituals of the Mother goddess with the queen who was her representative .

Il mito racconta che, con questo seguito, il giovane Dioniso, fatto impazzire da Era,vagò lungo le sponde del Mediterraneo e in Asia fino all'India diffondendo ovunque la coltivazione della vite e l'uso del vino, la bevanda che inebria, scioglie dai vincoli e quindi avvicina al primitivo stato naturale dell'umanità, libero da ogni convenzione sociale.

The myth says that, with this procession, the young Dionysus, made a fool by Hera, wandered along the shores of the Mediterranean sea and through Asia to India spreading everywhere the cultivation of grapes and the use of wine, the drink that inebriates, melts constraints and then approaches the primitive natural state of mankind, free from any social convention.

A Dioniso è quindi sacra la vite i cui pampini tiene spesso in mano, nonché il vino, per cui impugna spesso un cantaro o un corno potorio.

Gli è sacra anche l'edera che abitualmente lo incorona. Essa infatti ben rappresenta l'immortale spirito vitale della Natura, poiché,anche d'inverno, quando tutti i frutti, uva compresa, sono scomparsi, continua a serpeggiare rigogliosa sulla Terra.

Tiene in mano il tirso, bastone sormontato da una pigna. Anche la pigna infatti è frutto di piante sempreverdi.

So, vine and wine are sacred to Dionysus who often holds vine leaves, a kantharos or a drinking horn in his hands.
Ivy is also sacred to him and usually crowns his head. In fact, ivy symbolizes the immortal life spirit of Nature, since, even in winter, when all the fruits, including grapes, have disappeared, the lush ivy continues to snake through the Earth.

The god holds the thyrsus, stick topped with a pine cone. Even the pine cone is the fruit of evergreen plants.

Chiudo con questi due piatti. Sono di terracotta e sono dipinti a mano, copie dell'originale proposto in apertura. 

Nel primo ho rispettato completamente le caratteristiche originali. Nel secondo ho voluto introdurre note di colore.

Entrambi sono stati apprezzati e comprati.

I close with these two plates. They are made of  terracotta and are hand-painted copies of the original pottery painting I proposed at the beginning.
In the first one, I completely respected the original features. In the second I wanted to introduce some color notes.
Both were appreciated and bought.

WORK IN PROGRESS and ... FINISHED.

La bella immagine della partenza di Trittolemo raffigurata su un vaso conservato nel Museo Salinas di Palermo, mi ha molto affascinato.
La volevo. Perciò l'ho dipinta su un piatto di terracotta.
E' stato un lavoro impegnativo, soprattutto perché ho voluto utilizzare l'engobbio che richiede una  lunga ed accurata stesura del colore ( due o tre mani) e la cottura in forno a 980°C.
Mentre dipingi non puoi sapere quale sarà il risultato dopo la cottura. Non puoi fare altro che lavorare al meglio, sperando di ottenere alla fine l'effetto desiderato.
I was really fascinated by the beautiful image showing the departure of Triptolemus on a Greek vase preserved in Salinas Museum in Palermo.
I wanted it, so I painted it on a terracotta plate.
The job was hard, mainly because I wanted to use engobe that wants a long and careful application of color (two or three coats) and baking in the oven at 980°C (1796°F).
While painting, you can't know how it will be after baked. You only have to work the best you can, hoping to obtain the wanted result at least.

Ho disegnato la scena centrale in un cerchio ed ho riportato il disegno su un piatto di terracotta.
Poichè il piatto aveva un colore pallido che, con la cottura, sarebbe sbiadito ancora di più, l'ho immerso in acqua mescolata con engobbio rossiccio e poi l'ho spennellato con lo stesso engobbio molto diluito, poiché volevo ottenere una colorazione non pesante.
I drew the central scene in a circle and I reported the pattern on a terracotta plate.
As the plate had a pale color that, when cooked, will be even more pale, I plunged it in water mixed with reddish engobe  and then I brushed with the same engobe very diluted, because I wanted to get a not heavy staining.

Sul piatto umido, con un pennello lungo e sottile ho tracciato tutti i contorni con l'engobbio nero mescolato con un po' di cristallina e diluito in poca acqua.
On the moist dish, with a long thin brush, I drew all the outlines with black engobe mixed with a little crystalline and diluted in a little water.

Poi ho dipinto le campiture con pennelli tondi  più o meno piccoli, avendo cura che il piatto fosse sempre umido.

Ho lasciato asciugare e ho dato una seconda mano, in certe zone anche una terza mano con un pennello piatto.
Then I painted the background with round brushes more or less small, making sure that the plate was always moist.
I let it dry and I gave a second coat, in some areas even a third coat with a flat brush.

Poi l'ho fatto cuocere nel forno a 980°C.                    Then I baked in oven at 980°C (1796°F)
E questo è il risultato                                                              And this is the result.

Mi sembra soddisfacente. L'engobbio nero, grazie alla mescolanza con la cristallina, ha un effetto denso e profondo, l'engobbio rossiccio risulta leggero e sfumato, come desideravo.
A freddo, ho dato il tocco finale: la lingua rossa e biforcuta del drago conduttore del magico carro.
It seems satisfactory. The black engobe, thanks to the mixing with  crystalline, has a dense and deep effect, the reddish engobe  is light and nuanced, as I wished.
With fresh color, I put the final touche: the forked red tongue of the dragon conductor of the magic chariot.
